Child porn offender sent to jail

A CAIRNS man has been jailed for possessing "depraved and heinous" child pornography.

The Cairns District Court was told that Declan Martin Macallister was caught with numerous child exploitation videos including those in the most serious categories showing sex acts between adults and children.

He also had numerous images of little girls from five years old in sexualised poses.

Macallister pleaded guilty to nine offences committed between 2013 and 2016 including using a carriage service to cause child pornography material to be transmitted to self, using a carriage service to solicit child pornography material and possessing child exploitation material.

Crown prosecutor Aaron Dunkerton described the images and videos as "depraved and heinous material" and said there was a strong need for deference in this case.

Since being charged Macallister has been humiliated while in public around Cairns including being called a "paedophile".

The court was told he is worried about being targeted while in jail.

Defence barrister Josh Trevino said his Irish-born client had been diagnosed with complex post traumatic stress disorder, major depressive disorder and suffered from sexual deviancy.

The court was told he also suffered stress disorder from a number of incidents including unknowingly being hired to courier a bomb while working in London.

Mr Trevino said his client was remorseful and was developing insight into his offending.

He was jailed for 20 months and will be released on a $1000 two-year good behaviour bond. He was also placed on a two-year probation order.
