Butlers sell car dealership

PROMINENT Toowoomba car dealership Butlers Toyota has been sold.

Industry sources report the deal could be worth up to $30million.

Documents obtained by The Chronicle revealed a new company Toowoomba Motors Pty Ltd, directed by Toyota dealers from central and north Queensland, has registered the business' new trading name Toowoomba Toyota at the current Ruthven St site.

Butlers Toyota owners Robbie and Des Butler were unavailable for comment on the deal yesterday.

The Butler family has owned the Toyota dealership for Toowoomba and district since 1966 and currently employs about 70 staff.

They have won multiple awards for their efforts, including the Toyota President Award.

In July 2009, Butlers Toyota opened its new multi-million dollar service department at the Toowoomba dealership.

It came after the 2004 opening of a state-of-the-art sales and showroom facility.

A document from the Australian Securities Investment Commission showed Toowoomba Motors Pty Ltd's directors to be Rockhampton Toyota dealer Ian Weigh, Townsville Toyota dealer Michael Carney, Ayr Toyota dealer Donald West and Brett Motton.

The company registered the new business name Toowoomba Toyota on November 10 and an Office of Fair Trading document showed the business started trading on December 1.

A representative from Ian Weigh Toyota yesterday refused to comment.
