Sports club makes a difference

ACROSS The Waves is the sports club that just keeps on giving.

The club is donating around $7000 worth of chairs, tables, crockery and glassware to the Salvation Army Tom Quinn Community Centre.

Club general manager Brendan Royall is happy to make the donation to the Salvos.

“When deciding we looked at all the local charities and we are real advocates of what the Salvos do,” he said.

“They do such a good job of looking after those that are less fortunate in the community.”

The club sent two truckloads of furniture to the centre on Friday and will send a third today.

Mr Royall said the club wanted to donate the furniture to a good cause rather than sell it, and the employees have backed the donation all the way.

“The staff are very community minded,” he said.

“They think it's a great initiative.”

The club is undergoing a major redevelopment which will include a new foyer and entrance, an outdoor kids' area and a new function room which is scheduled for completion in June 2010.

Centre community service manager Tom Osborne said the donation is greatly appreciated.

“We're rapt,” he said.

“We will be able to make a great use of all the furniture in the centre.”

Some furniture will be put to use in the centre and the rest will be sent to the Salvos family stores where all funds from purchases will go back to the community.

Mr Osborne said they are always short of furniture.

“Across The Waves have helped the Salvos before and we are very grateful,” he said.
