Bundy memoirs are published

STORIES by Bundaberg people will be immortalised in print with the release of Memoirs 2009: A Group Collection this month.

The publication is a collection of stories written by members of the Bundaberg University of the Third Age (U3A) memoir writing class.

One of the local authors, Jan Scarborough, said she was thrilled to have three of her memoirs published.

“I am very excited,” she said.

“I initially wrote them for my family, but it is great to share these stories with everyone.”

The keen memoir writer has been going to the class for about 18 months and said writing skills were not the only thing she gained each week at class.

“We do learn how to write and proofread and use punctuation, but it is a lot more than that,” she said.

“We learn how to encourage each other and give and receive support.”

U3A memoir teacher Ruth Bell is proud to see the progress made by her students.

“It’s been an excellent group and an excellent year,” she said.

“One of the most rewarding things is seeing people grow and everyone does in the class. It’s important to me to see that my writers are going somewhere and this book really shows that they are.”

Mrs Bell has also had a big week with the release of her first book on Tuesday, Memoir Writing: An ABC.

The book is an easy to read, quick reference book on memoir writing.

“It’s a dream come true and I’m very excited,” she said.

“I just hope I can make enough money to write my next book.”

Mrs Bell worked as a teacher and principal for 38 years and knew she wanted to continue helping people after she finished work.

“I wanted to do something meaningful and memoirs are really important,” she said.

“I saw the U3A had no classes on the topic and it went from there. I have been teaching memoir writing for around four years now.”
