Bundy functions to get new home next year

A NEW facility will be the premier hire location for functions next year, taking over from the Civic Centre in the CBD.

Bundaberg Regional Council venues spokesman David Batt said the completion of the multi-use sports and community centre - the Bundaberg Mulitplex - would provide a first-class facility for functions.

"It is intended that this new council facility will become the premier hire location for functions in the Bundaberg area," Cr Batt said.

The Civic Centre has been Bundaberg's main function hire venue for many years.

Construction began in the early 1960s with governor Henry Abel Smith officially opening it on March 3, 1962.

The Multiplex, at 1 Civic Ave, is part of the redevelopment of the old showgrounds.

The $15 million facility will also accommodate the PCYC, a three-court arena, gymnastics hall, gym, group fitness area and food preparation facilities and will be used as a major evacuation centre during natural disasters.

Cr Batt said the council's bookings team had made every effort to contact groups and individuals affected by the change.

He said the Civic Centre would remain for hire for now and any changes to its future use would be a matter for the council once the Multiplex opened.

Phone the council's bookings team on 1300 883 699.
