Bundy cafe cream of the crop
A BUNDABERG cafe has beaten the state's best restaurants to be voted the most popular venue in Queensland.
Indulge Cafe was yesterday announced as the winner of the Brisbane Times Good Food Guide 2016 People's Choice award.
Owners Amanda and Larry Hinds said they were "ecstatic" about the result and thanked customers for their support.
"We are absolutely delighted, honoured and grateful to the people of Bundaberg and those near and far who eat with us and enjoy our food," the duo said.
The couple opened the cafe 12 years ago and said they never thought it would grow to the successful business it is today.
"The idea was to have somewhere small that served fantastic food, great coffee and lots of premium produce," Amanda said.
"It has grown far beyond our expectations."
The couple described their cafe as a "farmer to plate" concept, using only the best produce from local growers within the region.
"Our cafe is based completely around the people who supply the produce," Amanda said.
"We wouldn't be here if it wasn't for them and our fantastic staff."
The duo said an average day at Indulge starts at around 5am with little time to put the feet up for a rest.
"On a Saturday we do around 300 breakfasts and make around 500 coffees," Amanda said.
"If you can imagine a system that is completely built from scratch - that is what we do every day."
While Amanda is preparing meals and chatting with local farmers in the kitchen, Larry is greeting customers inside the cafe.
"We are very customer based and love having that community-farmer connection," he said.
The Good Food Guide is the nation's premier food publication and the winner of the prestigious award is chosen by the public, not critics.
The strength of regional hospitality in Queensland was on show in the people's choice award, with the top three spots taken by eateries outside Brisbane.
Ristorante Fellini on the Gold Coast came second and Coast at Hervey Bay - the 2013 winner - was third.
Amanda and Larry said they couldn't be happier with their top result.
"We are all about Bundaberg and think we are in an extremely enviable position," the duo said.
"We are very lucky to be where we are.
"Thank you to everyone who has supported us."
