Waves in position for Mecano title
FOOTBALL: Across the Waves Soccer Club is in a good position to take the Mecano Cup after defeating Golden City in Gympie 6-3 on Saturday.
Waves goal scorer Jason De Papi enjoyed personal success on Saturday despite a recent knee reconstruction and is confident of a win.
“I just got back onto the team after 12 months off. I wasn't planning on coming back, but I did, and then last week I just came off the bench and scored,” he said.
“We've got a few hectic weeks coming up, playing pretty much every Tuesday and Saturday, but if we play anything like we did last week I'm sure we can come away with a victory,” he said.
The Waves enjoyed a comfortable early advantage over Golden City on Saturday, leading 3-0 after 20 minutes.
The visitors scored again in the second half, only to concede three consecutive goals from the Gympie side.
But the comeback was short-lived – Waves scoring twice more, bringing them to a decisive victory.
Waves will hope to eradicate the complacency shown in last game's second half and once again intimidate a much younger Gympie unit.
The second leg of the Mecano Cup home and away final will be played at Martens Oval on Saturday night, where the Waves will be welcoming back Matt Martin and suspended Matt Smith.
