Memories of grandfather at Bundaberg Fire Station

MY GRANDFATHER, Bill Crane, was caretaker of the Bundaberg Fire Station from 1905 to 1923.

When there was a fire, Bill would ring the bell to call the men and then harness the horses together and attach the water tanker to be ready when the men arrived.

He worked there for 18 years until the first motorised fire truck was brought into use in 1923.

The station was situated next to Buss Park where the Civic Centre is now.

It was close to the old Church of England.

Beryl McCurley (nee Crane)
