Childcare worker charged over child porn gets bail

UPDATE 11.30AM: A BUNDABERG after-school childcare worker charged with child exploitation offences has been granted bail on strict conditions.

The 38-year-old North Bundaberg man was charged with five counts of possessing child exploitation material after the Crime and Corruption Commission and officers from the Bundaberg Child Protection Investigation Unit raided his property on Tuesday.

The search located a computer and a number of storage devices that allegedly contained child exploitation material.

The man faced Bundaberg Magistrates Court today, where solicitor Matt Maloy made an application for bail on his client's behalf.

Mr Maloy said the man had no previous criminal history.

Magistrate Aaron Simpson said he was concerned about the defendant's mental health and risk of self-harm but granted bail on the condition he live with his mother and stay away from any education facility.

"The defendant must not have any unsupervised contact with any child under the age of 16 years," he said.

"In light of some of the allegations about photographing children near schools, the defendant must not to the following places: any education facilities including any primary school and/or any high school."

The magistrate also ordered the man to undergo further treatment under a mental health plan.

He must also not access the internet to use Facebook or any other social media site.

The matter was adjourned for committal mention on December 10.

EARLIER: THE Crime and Corruption Commission (CCC) has charged a 38-year-old Bundaberg North man with child exploitation offences.

The man works at a before and after school care service at a primary school in the Wide Bay-Burnett region.

The CCC executed a search warrant at a residential property in Bundaberg North and located a computer and a number of storage devices that allegedly contained child exploitation material.

The CCC was assisted by the Queensland Police Service (QPS) Bundaberg Child Protection Investigation Unit.

The CCC charged the man with five counts of possessing child exploitation material, contrary to section 228D Criminal Code (Qld).

He was remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear in the Bundaberg Magistrates Court today.

The CCC has notified the Department of Education and Training.

Investigations are ongoing. As the matter is now before the courts, the CCC is unable to comment further.
