Buccaneers name their inaugural squad

FOOTBALL: A mixture of youth and experience will lead the Wide Bay Buccaneers into a new era of football in the region next year.

Buccaneers senior coach Tim Lunnon has named his inaugural squad for the sides first season in the Football Queensland Premier League.

Lunnon has named a 16-man squad, which will rise to 20 just before the start of the season.

Included in the list are leaders Jason McEwan, Jacob Chapman, Sam Meyer and Brad Mitchell, who were named as the leadership group last month.

They are joined by Brothers Aston Villa's Lachlan Scarborough who won the Wide Bay League title with the Bundaberg club earlier this year.

The Waves, KSS Jets and the United Warriors have provided the most players to the squad with three each with Bundaberg providing seven players and the Fraser Coast providing eight.

International player Ben Brookfield from Launceston City rounds out the 16 players named.

"After the last session, all players came together and said this is a good squad,” Lunnon said.

"We're really good with defenders and midfielders within the squad.”

The final four positions of the squad will be filled by one more senior player, the second international player and two from the under-18 and U20 squads.

"People might think we aren't filling the squad up with players because of interest but that isn't the case,” Lunnon said.

"We want to promote and encourage those youngsters in U18 and U20 that there is a chance for them to play in the seniors so that is why the spots are free.”

The squad is currently on break for December and will return to training in January ahead of the new season that starts in February.

SQUAD: Jason McEwan (Bingera), Chris Merrison (KSS Jets), Jacob Chapman (Sunbury), Sam Meyer (The Waves), Brad Mitchell (United Warriors), Matt Twyford (The Waves), Lachlan Scarborough (Brothers Aston Villa), Ben Brookfield (Launceston City), Patrick Fennessy (The Waves), John Cullen (KSS Jets), Jacob Lynch (KSS Jets), Dylan-James Cairney (United Park Eagles), Jai Lambden (Fraser Flames), Shaun Mitchell (United Warriors), Tim Stevenson (Bargara), Blake Walker (United Warriors).
