Broncos player ratings: ‘He’ll be having nightmares’

So much for starting the season with a bang.

The Broncos returned from a 70-day hiatus with a real whimper against the Eels.

JAMAYNE ISAAKO - 5

Did not live up to the lofty heights he started the season with. He positioned himself well at the back for most of the game to defuse Mitchell Moses' kicking game but just didn't have the game-breaking opportunities he found himself in against the Cowboys and Rabbitohs.

COREY OATES - 5

Maybe the nightmares of Bankwest Stadium were swimming around his head but Oates couldn't live up to the standards he's used to at Suncorp. Was one of just three Broncos to reach 100+ running metres in the only positive to an otherwise below par performance.

KOTONI STAGGS - 3

It was a night to forget for Kotoni last night. He was found out in defence multiple times and let in a simple try. He was picked out by Parramatta last year and they did it again last night. Wouldn't be surprised if he has nightmares about Eels.

DARIUS BOYD - 4

The veteran Bronco had a great opportunity to score a try in the second half and swing the momentum back to the home side but couldn't finish it off. Wasn't terrible in defence but gave away a silly penalty and made an error in attack which only benefited Parramatta's attack.

Darius Boyd had a chance early but was otherwise fairly anonymous.

JESSE ARTHARS - 3

His opposition winger - Maika Sivo - ran riot over the inexperienced Broncos recruit. Sivo scored a spectacular try in front of Arthars who was caught out in defence. He was substituted in the 53rd minute with Herbie Farnworth so had limited time to make amends.

ANTHONY MILFORD - 5

Was swarmed by Parramatta's defence and couldn't find the room to play his razzle-dazzle football. Bombed a try in the first half which would have drawn them level with the Eels. Finished the game with two errors and a crucial missed tackle - which came during Parramatta's first try of the game.

BRODIE CROFT - 7

Found his first try in Broncos colours with a deceptive show-and-go early in the first half and was one of the better players in a lacklustre Brisbane team. Took the line on every chance he got and his kicking game was again impressive.

THOMAS FLEGLER - 6

The Tully product was handed the starting No.8 jersey and was solid in the middle without being fantastic. Ran for 73m but was outmuscled by the giant Parramatta pack.

Jake Turpin clears the ruck but his main impact was in defence.

JAKE TURPIN - 5

Lacked the attacking flair Anthony Seibold wants out of a dummy half. Did little to worry Parramatta around the ruck but was one of Brisbane's best defenders. Finished the game with 43 tackles, second highest in the team, and put in a dogged effort defending the tryline.

PAYNE HAAS - 7

The only Broncos forward to run more than 100m. Haas continues to be the best forward in the Broncos pack and had extra pressure with the absence of David Fifita and Tevita Pangai Jr. Played the entire 80 minutes and didn't let fatigue get the better of him.

ALEX GLENN - 5

The luckless skipper can't catch a break. Was taken to hospital in the second half because of a cut to his leg. Didn't set the game alight in his first game as captain, finishing with just 21 running metres.

JAMIL HOPOATE - 3

Had a horror show with the ball. Granted, several passes to the backrower weren't great but he still should have got himself in a better position. Several of his dropped balls turned the momentum back into Parramatta's favour.

PATRICK CARRIGAN - 6

The workhorse was solid in the middle last night, having to contain the monster Parramatta pack. Was Brisbane's top defender, with 45 tackles, and made 11 runs for 95m. Didn't really put a foot wrong.

BENCH

HERBIE FARNWORTH - 5

Was thrown into the game in the 53rd minute as a replacement for Arthars. Made 60 running metres in his half-hour stint on the wing but was also caught out in defence by the Eels.

JOE OFAHENGAUE - 5

His first game back from suspension was good without being great. The Maroons enforcer made some strong carries and was good in defence but never looked like troubling the Parramatta defensive line.

ETHAN BULLEMOR - 5

Was pitchforked into the side for the second half to replace the injured Glenn. Had a solid outing at Suncorp Stadium in just his second NRL match and can only improve from the experience.

It was a tough first game back for Matt Lodge.

MATT LODGE - 5

Played 26 minutes during his miraculous return from a knee injury but lacked the bruising hit-ups he's renowned for. Threw a terrible pass to Hopoate which resulted in an Eels try. Will likely improve having had the knee seriously tested.
