Christmas sounds hit Bundaberg
COMPOSER Peter Rankine will give Bundaberg a new voice this festive season — in the form of four songs he has written for the Orpheus Singers and the Bundaberg Youth Choir.
One of the songs, God is With Us, will be sung by the choirs at a special concert this weekend.
The full set will be presented for the first time next month, in Roland Thring and the Year all his Christmases Came at Once, a play by local playwright Rod Ainsworth.
“Rod Ainsworth has written an excellent play, and it’s been a joy for me and the others in the creative team to contribute to its realisation,” Mr Rankine said.
“It is a charming and multi-faceted story, linking the Christmas story with other themes to do with society, humanity and the spirit.”
Bundaberg Orpheus Singers musical director and conductor Alison O’Malley said the Bundaberg choirs were privileged to have Mr Rankine composing for them and to be singing his composition.
“It is quite a challenge for us,” she said.
The songs were commissioned by the two choirs, with funding assistance from the Regional Arts Development Fund to celebrate Queensland’s 150th anniversary.
The Bundaberg Municipal Band will join the choirs at its Christmas concert at the Holy Rosary Church on Sunday, December 6, where God is With Us will be premiered.
