'MASS RESCUE': Flash rip sweeps away eight swimmers

COOLUM Beach lifeguards have had their work cut out today due to unstable conditions, with a mass rescue unfolding at the moment.

A flash rip swept all eight swimmers off their feet, forcing the rescue effort.

Lifeguards were able to bring all swimmers back to shore and supervisor Rhys Drury advised swimmers to be careful in unpredictable conditions.

"There have been a lot of people up there today - really busy," he said.

"The conditions are a bit bad, not too big in terms of swells but the high tide and water draining out are making the conditions quite unstable."

Swimmers are urged to stay close to shore and stay between the flags.
