BREAKING: Deb Frecklington to put hand up for LNP leadership

NANANGO MP Deb Frecklington has announced she will run for Leader of the LNP.

"Today I'm announcing that I'm putting up my hand to run for leadership of the LNP in Queensland," Mrs Frecklington said.

"My nomination offers an opportunity for the LNP to take a fresh approach that will allow us to reconnect with our community - an opportunity to forge a party that draws strongly on the LNP's traditional values combined with a good dose of down-to-earth, common-sense ideas that will drive Queensland forward.

"I have asked Tim Mander to run alongside me as deputy and he's agreed."

Mrs Frecklington said it had been an honour to serve as deputy LNP leader for the past 18 months.

"Queenslanders have spoken and as a party we must listen, regroup and rebuild faith in the LNP as the only conservative party that can actually deliver for Queenslanders across the state," she said.

Mrs Frecklington said she paid tribute to current leader Tim Nicholls.

"Politics is a tough game and Tim left nothing on the field in his drive to improve Queensland," she said.

Tim Nicholls resigned from the leadership of the LNP on Friday morning, where he thanked Mrs Frecklington for her support as his deputy leader.

"To my deputy, Deb Frecklington - you are a fantastic local member, Shadow Minister and Deputy and a passionate voice for all of Queensland," Mr Nicholls said.

"I could not have done this job without your support, counsel and wisdom."

If Mrs Frecklington wins the nomination for LNP leader she will become the first women to lead the party, and its former Liberal and National parties, in Queensland.

She would also be the second leader from the South Burnett region, the first being Queensland's longest serving Premier, Sir Joh Bjelke-Petersen.

The LNP will decide who they want to be their leader at 2pm on Tuesday.
