Breakers coach tips Penney to bounce back

BASKETBALL: NZ Breakers coach Paul Henare is expecting his star Kirk Penney to bounce back when the side hosts a visiting Brisbane Bullets Thursday night.

Penney was held scoreless for the first time during his decorated 174-game NBL career when the Bullets claimed a 81-76 win over the Breakers on Sunday.

He missed all six of his shots.

It followed another night to forget for the 37-year-old Kiwi great two days earlier when he downed just two of eight shots in a loss to Perth.

Despite Penney's struggles following a knee complaint, the Breakers are 9-3 and remain atop the table, for now.

"No one around here is getting worried about Kirk Penney, he has hardly had any basketball this past month,” Henare said.

"He is disappointed sure, he has high standards and will want to get points on the board on Thursday night.

"But we have complete faith in Kirk Penney, he is world class and it won't be long before he clicks back into gear.”

Henare was also unconcerned by the Breakers' two-game losing streak.

"It has taken us out of our rhythm a little. We're finding ways to play to our strengths while teams change things up against us. We will go through this a few times in the season,” he said.

"But when you have such a good run and then lose a couple of games we are going to get questions, I understand that.”
