Cinema a Boxing Day tradition
AFTER the dust settles from Christmas Day, the chances are if you are not watching the Boxing Day Test match you are likely to be heading to the cinema to catch one of the latest Hollywood blockbusters.
With a plethora of movie blockbusters being released from Boxing Day, movie-goers and families are set to pack Toowoomba's cinemas over the festive period.
Birch Carroll and Coyle assistant manager Josh Melano said Boxing Day was historically the busiest time of the year and Toowoomba's love affair with the silver screen was set to continue this year.
"Boxing Day is considered the biggest and busiest cinema trade day in the calendar year and this year will be no exception," Mr Melano said
"On Boxing Day alone we will show more than 50 individual movie sessions and on average more than 5000 people will pass through the door," he added.
Boxing Day releases traditionally include a mix of blockbusters, kids' flicks and art-house fare.
The movies on every film critic's lips this year include: The Iron Lady, Happy Feet 2, Warhorse, The Adventures of Tin Tin, Sherlock Holmes 2 and The Muppets Movie.
"Traditionally the biggest blockbusters of the year are released on Boxing Day to coincide with the lead-up to the Golden Globes and Oscars in America," Mr Melano said.
"This year, The Iron Lady is getting a lot of Academy attention and I think it, along with Happy Feet 2, will be the big ones this year," he said.
