Book tells stories of courage and strength
UNITINGCARE Community has launched a new book on stories of strength and courage from the Bundaberg region natural disasters in 2013.
Finding Strength in Words was developed through a project inspired by the writings of members of the Bundaberg region community at gatherings facilitated by UnitingCare Community following the natural disasters of January 2013.
The publication is a combination of these writings about strength and resilience with additional content from the Bundaberg Writers Club through workshops facilitated by the Queensland Writers Centre.
Unitingcare Community counsellor Alex Johnson, who facilitated gatherings, said storytelling was an important tool in the recovery process.
"Collective story telling is a tradition as old as human history," he said.
"It's a wonderful medium in which not only our history is shared and kept alive but also how we've coped during hard times; what strengths we called on and developed over time.
"The gatherings provided a unique opportunity for people to recall their own stories of strength and courage as a means to addressing adversity in the present.
"Now that these stories have been captured, they will be able to be used as a source of knowledge and strength to others during difficult times. What a wonderful gift."
This publication and the gatherings have been supported by donations made to UnitingCare Community from the Rotary Club of East Bundaberg and Rotary District 9570.
The Queensland Writers Centre has supporting this initiative through their regional programs.
This project has also been supported by Afloat - Creative Recovery, a Creative Regions Ltd project, funded through Arts Queensland's Creative Recovery - Building Resilience program, an initiative of the Queensland Government.
