'Bomb in aisle seven': Angry customer's revenge

A WOOLWORTHS employee felt her body "die a little" when an angry customer warned he had planted a bomb in the store.

"Stewing" over how he had been treated at the Beerwah supermarket, a disgruntled Paul Stuart Hiddins rang the store about 26 times in one day.

Often he said nothing, sometimes he laughed, the last two times he swore and complained about the "poor service", the Maroochydore District Court heard on Tuesday.

This was the start of Hiddins' offending which would see him plead guilty to one bomb hoax charge after he sent Woolworths into lockdown on September 28 last year.

The court heard Hiddins, then 49, had consumed a few alcoholic drinks before he walked the five minutes from his home to the store and told a 20-year-old attendant: "I would keep an eye on aisle seven if I was you."

The court heard when the woman asked why, Hiddins responded, "Because I put a bomb down there".

He then smiled and left before the store was evacuated for 30 minutes as police determined the threat was false.

Hiddins partially blamed having to wait 20 minutes to purchase six items for his actions, and said alcohol was not a major factor.

Defence barrister Nathan Turner the court Hiddins was remorseful and had written an apology which would be forwarded to the staff.

"It was a terribly stupid, split second decision," he said.

Judge Glen Cash sentenced Hiddins to 12 months' probation with a condition he seek medical and/or psychological treatment.
