Bogut, Mills lead Aussies to first-up win

BASKETBALL: Australia's Boomers have crushed world number five France 87-66 in a promising start to their Rio Olympic medal quest.

The Boomers turned up the heat with a dominating 25-15 third quarter to start the final term with a 61-48 lead.

Guard Patty Mills led all scorers with 21 points as the Boomers powered away from a 36-33 half-time lead to win by 21 points.

NBA star Andrew Bogut was sensational for the Boomers, converting nine of his 10 field goals, pulling down five rebounds and dishing off four assists after being in extreme doubt with a knee injury heading into Rio.

Fellow NBA player Matthew Dellavedova finished with 10 assists.

Bogut and Dellavedova combined superbly with Bogut jamming down a few dunks off Dellavedova passes above the ring.

Aron Baynes was also a big contributor with 14 points as Australia spread the scoring which would have pleased Boomers coach Andrej Lemanis.

Mills hit a game-high four three-pointers to go with five assists as the Boomers half court, up tempo game overwhelmed France, ranked six places higher in the world than Australia.

Australia now plays Serbia on Tuesday before their showdown with gold medal favourite USA on Thursday.
