Bizarre addition to child’s photos
A South Australian man uploaded childhood photos of his girlfriend's sister on to a "tribute website", where others edited them by adding pictures of their own genitals, a court has heard.
Jarrod Garry Venning, 22, was convicted and handed a good behaviour bond after he pleaded guilty to child pornography offences in the District Court in Adelaide.
In sentencing this week, Judge Gordon Barrett said the circumstances of the crime were "rather unusual".
A prosecutor told the court Venning made dated pictures of the victim available on the website, and others modified the photos by superimposing pictures of their penises over them.
He then re-downloaded the edited images and saved them on to his phone.
"Although your girlfriend's younger sister was 18 years old at the time (of the offending), the photographs of her which you used were photographs of her when she was younger," Judge Barrett said in sentencing remarks.
Some of the photos had been taken when the girl was aged between 11 and 13, while another was taken when she was aged between 14 and 16.
Anime child porn images and photographs with sexually explicit captions were also found on Venning's phone, but he was not charged or sentenced in relation to those.
Judge Barrett said Venning was "deeply ashamed" of what he did, and has apologised to his girlfriend's family.
"Although your girlfriend's sister has provided a victim impact statement, she has done so to indicate that she has not suffered any trauma or physical injuries, nor suffered any financial loss," Judge Barrett said.
"She, your girlfriend, that is her older sister, and their parents, are supportive of you and I am told they do not wish to see you incarcerated."
A psychologist who assessed Venning found he had "paedophilic proclivities" but he did not have diagnosed paedophilia.
Venning, of Whyalla on the Eyre Peninsula, west of Adelaide, admitted to the expert that he had "some sexual interest" in girls aged 10 and older.
He pleaded guilty to two counts of producing child exploitation material, with one of those being an aggravated charge.
He also admitted to one aggravated and one basic count of possessing child exploitation material.
The aggravated counts relate to the production and possession of images taken when the victim was aged between 11 and 13.
