Bingera fight back for perfect season

FOOTBALL: Absolutely nothing was going to stop Bingera's Debbie Caldwell from playing in her sides grand final on Saturday.

The player-coach tore her anterior cruciate ligament one month ago, which should have ruled her out for the rest of the season.

Instead, Caldwell mustered incredible stamina to play 10 minutes from the bench in the second half to help the Stripeys win 2-1 against the United Warriors.

"This week she did as much as possible and somehow got out there to play,” Bingera captain Madelyn McCracken said.

"She held off surgery until Tuesday (today) just to be a part.”

The win capped off a perfect season for the side as they won back-to-back titles.

But they were made to work hard for it by a gallant Warriors side who took it to the defending champions.

The Warriors took an early lead before Bingera fought back with two goals to lead at half time.

McCracken scored what turned out to be the winner in a contest that saw no goals in the second half.

"We were genuinely shocked to go down early,” she said.

"The contest had a tough feel to it and it was the hardest one for us all year.

"We knew if we kept pushing we'd get the goals to come back, which we did.”

The side is now unbeaten in its past 44 matches, including 23 wins and one draw this season.

"It's a huge achievement for any team in any sport to finish the season unbeaten,” McCracken said.

"We'll now have a good off-season and recover for next year.”

McCracken said most players should be back next year as the club aims for three titles in a row.
