Bindi Irwin shines in Dancing With The Stars debut

BINDI Irwin has done her family and Australia proud in her debut on Dancing With The Stars today.

The 17-year-old received a standing ovation for her high-energy jive routine with dance partner Derek Hough.

Her mum Terri and brother Robert could be seen cheering her on from the crowd.

"My mum always said any time dad would watch me dancing around the zoo he would cry," she said.

"I think the real reason I'm doing this is to make him proud and to make everyone at home in Australia proud.

"I think everyone is going to see a whole new side to Bindi."

The Sunshine Coast teen tied with former Backstreet Boys member Nick Carter for the top score of the night.

Irwin started her number in a khaki dress, which was quickly ripped off to reveal a sparkling emerald green dress.

"From the bush to the ballroom," exclaimed judge Julianne Hough.

"The flicks, the kicks, the face, the fun - this is what this competition is about. That was the best performance of the night."

Italian judge Bruno Tonioli, who recently spent a stint judging the Australian version of the show, called Irwin the "wonder form Down Under".

"It had a finish that was so wonderful to see in week one," he said.

"Plus what you have is adorable charm that translates."
