Big was best at Sandy Hook

EVERYONE in motorsport knows size matters, and thanks to the tricky conditions at the first round of the Ski Racing Queensland 2014-2015 season over the weekend it was another case of the bigger, the better.

Strong south-easterly winds packed a punch and drivers along with the skiers had difficulty powering into the headwind as they completed the downriver part of the course.

It wasn't only the horsepower difference that gave boats like Blazen and Burnin the edge, it was the size of the hull and sheer weight of the boats that helped them push their way through the water and wind.

With some of the best boats and skiers in the country on the water at Sandy Hook, competition was fierce and in the open men Brisbane-based skier Richard Souwer took the win.

The Gold Coast's Emma Williams was too good in the open women's race and Travis Pick showed plenty of skill in the junior class (Under-10) to cross the line first.

Skiing behind Quick Decision driven Jason Loeskow in the social men, Bundaberg's Adam Forgacs snuck home by the length of the rope to get the season off to a good start. Joining Forgacs was Logan Dewar, who after a year off from the sport skied well in tough conditions.

Another couple of highlights for the locals from the weekend was the return of Steve 'Carl Kennedy' Barrett to the sport and after moving back to Bundaberg to be closer to his father in law, Jamie Conway took out the 70mph class behind Agent Orange.

The visiting drivers and skiers praised the San Hook Ski Club for hosting a wonderful event and are looking forward to coming back for round four in April next year.

Along with the second-last round of the 2014-2015 state series, Sandy Hook will host the 2015 Queensland titles in the June long weekend.
