Berry holding on to hope of beating Winx
WINX has drawn barrier eight in a field of nine as she shoots for 16 straight wins in Saturday's George Ryder Stakes at Rosehill.
Australia's champion mare has jumped from barriers four, two, three and three at her past four starts, but regular jockey Hugh Bowman will have a bit more work to do from the second outside barrier.
Winx's rivals include champion sprinter Chautauqua, who has drawn barrier one.
His jockey, Tommy Berry, hasn't given up hope of toppling the great mare.
"She hasn't been beaten for a long time and what she's done in her races has been incredible," Berry said.
"But she has been up against some stayers in recent times, like Ron Dufficy said on Thoroughbred Weekly, and she is coming up against a couple of nice sprinter-milers now and my bloke is stepping up to the 1500m and will have a lot of sprint in his legs.
"He is probably one of the only horses that can run similar times to her over the last 600 metres in his races.
"It just depends on how much of a start I'm going to have to give her.
"If I'm within two lengths of her on the home corner it will be an exciting race."
Winx's other rivals include multiple Group 1 winner Le Romain (barrier seven) and Tosen Stardom (barrier nine), in what many are tipping as the race of the autumn carnival.
