Bernardi condemns kids' fundraising, then takes credit

SOUTH Australian senator Cory Bernardi has brushed off his controversial comments about an Adelaide primary school fundraiser that invited students to wear a dress by firing off a cheeky tweet.

With a big smile and a pint of beer, the Australian Conservatives leader, who was in West Australia arguing the 'No' case for marriage equality, tweeted "After a successful week of fundraising and politics, it's time for a cold beer on a beautiful day."

On Wednesday night advertiser.com.au reported comments by Senator Bernardi, also communicated via Twitter, questioning a fundraising campaign by Craigburn Primary School to raise money to help African girls go to school by inviting students to come to school in casual clothes or a dress.

Senator Bernardi questioned the timing of the fundraiser, at the same time as a national postal vote on the issue of same-sex marriage.

"One school in SA now has 'wear a dress day'. This gender morphing is really getting absurd", he tweeted, along with a link to the school's fundraising page.

Publicity of Senator Bernardi's concerns, including numerous tweets by gay ABC comedian Josh Thomas backing the school's choice of charity, has seen support for the fundraiser skyrocket.

Students had hoped to raise a modest $900 but have instead raised more than $248,000 off the back of the furore, which has made headlines around Australia.

Some people dedicated their donations to Senator Bernardi.
