WATCH: Benny Pike speaks after fine and licence suspension
OLYMPIAN Geoffrey Benjamin "Benny" Pike has received a slap on the wrist after pleading guilty to a high-range drink driving charge.
Smartly dressed in a grey suit, the former boxer pleaded guilty and said he was very sorry and embarrassed for the incident on August 4 and had sought medical and psychological help.
The 61-year-old was arrested at Marcoola after witnesses noticed him swerving across the road. His blood alcohol level was 0.181.
The court took note of Mr Pike's previous drink driving history - he has been guilty six times before - but noted these were eight years ago and were lower-order offences.
Mr Pike was given a $750 fine and his licence will be suspended for eight months.
Mr Pike said he realised he had a problem and was attending Alcoholics Anonymous.
He also told the court he had been through a terrible year after losing his employment at the Palmer Coolum Resort in March and his mother has been unwell.
