Simmons’ ‘power move’ raises eyebrows
BEN Simmons, you cheeky dog.
With a win in the NBA All-Star weekend's Rising Stars game in the bank, and no call-up for Monday's marquee event, the Aussie hoops star has time to get up to a bit of mid-season mischief in LA. And he's off to a nice start.
The 76ers point guard raised eyebrows on the morning of the All-Star game by posting a photograph of himself alongside Cleveland Cavaliers forward Tristan Thompson, Washington Wizards point guard John Wall and a man who needs no introduction, LeBron James.
All four are signed to the same management group and Simmons played up what this could mean when free agency opens later this year by captioning the image "June 30 midnight".
As speculation around James' future increases - and the Simmons, Joel Embiid-76ers continue to rise up the Eastern Conference standings - the prospect of The King joining The Process has become a topic of conversation.
At this point there isn't any hard evidence James is considering adding his championship pedigree to Philly's young core.
All we have is the widely-held belief he's not tied to Cleveland beyond this season and will only move to a team that immediately offers him the opportunity to contend for a title.
The most discussed destination, if James was to leave the Cavs, is Los Angeles - where he could team with Lonzo Ball and another player who is rumoured to be eyeing the Lakers, OKC forward Paul George.
But as the 76ers continue to win they could become an increasingly tantalising proposition, even though most were willing to look past Simmons' post as a bit of fun.
But it also sparked immediate discussion around how well-suited Simmons and James are to playing together given both are currently the primary ballhandlers for their teams.
Moving Simmons off-ball could present challenges given the improvement he still needs to make as a shooter.
From our point of view, we're willing to see them try.
