Ben enjoys big win
COFFS Harbour's Ben Newton is enjoying the sweet taste of victory after the Australian Steelers defeated Japan in the final of the Asia Oceania Wheelchair Rugby Championships.
Australia dominated proceedings to claim the gold medal 59-41 against the competition's third seed.
Ben's mother, Roxy Newton, said she was delighted with her son's success in the event but was on the edge of her seat for most of the grand final.
"I am so proud of Ben. He has worked so hard and deserves every bit of success," she said yesterday.
"Unlike in previous games there was no online stream of the final, so my daughter and I were desperately trying to find out how the game was going.
"The suspense was killing us.
"We finally found out at 9.15 last night that Ben and the Aussie team had won. We were so excited when we heard the news."
Ms Newton said it a long, and well-deserved night of celebration followed for her son.
"I received a few text messages from Ben through the night and he said the boys were really pumped up after the win.
"Ben sent me a message at 4am saying the team were still out celebrating their win."
The Steelers will return to Australia later in the week, with their focus switching now to next year's Paralympics in London.
Ms Newton proudly said she would be there when here son hit the court next year.
"I have already booked my tickets to London and I can't wait to watch Ben and the Australian team do their country proud," she said.
