Bell gets a ringing endorsement after trade to Lions

BRISBANE kicked off the second week of the AFL's trade period by securing hard-running Carlton midfielder Tom Bell and Geelong pair Josh Walker and Jarrad Jansen.

The Blues sent Bell, who finished equal fourth in Carlton's best-and-fairest last season, and selection 41 to the Lions, in exchange for picks 21 and 60.

Brisbane also got Walker, who kicked 19 goals in 16 games for the Cats in 2015, and Jansen, an inside midfielder who is yet to play a senior game, in exchange for next year's third-round pick.

Geelong's general manager of football Steven Wells said Walker and Jansen had wanted the opportunity to play regular senior footy, and the club was happy to accommodate their request.

Lions list manager Peter Schwab said it had been a good day for the club, in particular securing Bell who wanted to return to his home state to be closer to his ill father.

"We are delighted to get Tom and to bring him back home to Queensland," Schwab said. "He had an excellent year in 2015 - he'll add plenty to our footy club.

"He's got experience, he's just starting to hit his peak years and he is a very strong and hard-running player."

After securing Patrick Dangerfield, Lachie Henderson and Scott Selwood in week one, Geelong added a fourth big name yesterday, sending picks 49 and 53 to the Gold Coast Suns for ruckman Zac Smith. The Suns then on-traded pick 53 to North Melbourne for ruckman Daniel Currie.

At 26, Currie has shown plenty of promise but has been stuck behind All Australian big man Todd Goldstein at the Kangaroos.
