WATERCOOLER: What is the worst highway in Australia?

LAST weekend I hit the road to attend a family reunion in Port Macquarie.

I looked up the RACQ trip planner and it told me that the trip from Ipswich down to the Mid North Coast would take me around seven hours.

Having lived in NSW for many years I realised that the Pacific Highway journey would bring with it some testing moments.

I remember writing many stories around a campaign called "Fix the Pacific Highway" more than 20 years ago.

Despite the many Pacific Highway deaths in the intervening years I was floored to see the highway is still in a terrible state.

It made the Bruce Highway look like an autobahn expressway.

The worst part of the highway has always been between Urunga and Kempsey and things haven't changed.

There is plenty of roadwork happening, but the big question those living in NSW must be asking why it has taken so long.

Many small white crosses with plastic flowers sit alongside the highway reflecting the many tragic accidents that have changed the lives of so many families.

If you believe things happen slowly with major Queensland roadworks I suggest you go for a drive and experience what has to be the worst major highway in Australia.

WHAT do you think? Where are the worst roads in Australia?
