BEER REVIEW: Sydney brews are a satisfying endeavour
I had cause to fly to Cairns the other day, and the view of the Barrier Reef from 20,000ft was absolutely amazing.
The colours, the clarity, and the complexity of this wonder of nature were on full display and it made me marvel at the skill of James Cook, who in 1770 found his way through this maze of reefs, only managing to nick the coral near what is today Cooktown.
His voyages on the Endeavour changed the West's knowledge of the world - in effect filling in parts of the globe that were then referred to as Terra Incognito - Land Unknown.
Which is a roundabout way of introducing Endeavour Brewing Co of The Rocks, Sydney. They started producing beer in about 2010, and make a point of using fresh (grown in the year of consumption) ingredients in all their products.
Hugh The Neighbour and I sat down to enjoy two of their fine products - the Reserve Pale Ale and the Reserve Amber Ale.
The Pale Ale is a classic US East Coast style - full of citrus and floral complexity. It pours a slightly cloudy light amber in the glass with a white head and herbal nose. It is bitter, but not too over the top - all in all, a very refreshing example of the style.
The Reserve Amber Ale however was a bit of a revelation. A deep coppery red colour in glass, it is slightly bitter but beautifully malty with a rich and creamy feel in the mouth. It is complex in flavour yet really approachable, and the perfect alternative if you are looking for something a bit heavier for the cooler weather without wanting to get into big chewy stouts and porters.
