Beer bottle victim goes silent on attack

A MAN injured in a brutal assault with a beer bottle has refused to talk with police about the incident in one of the Townsville's most public areas.

It's understood the incident took place about 9.20pm on Friday night on The Strand as a man, 30, and a woman, 37, sat near the water park.

Early police investigations suggest the man confronted another person over inappropriate comments directed towards his girlfriend when he was set upon and hit in the face and neck with a beer bottle.

The man was left with significant facial injuries after he was hit a number of times with the bottle and had it pushed into his face. He was taken to Townsville Hospital and was discharged early Saturday morning.

Inspector Damien Crosby said no one had been charged with the assault.

"Investigations continue, however, the victim declined to provide a statement and requested that the matter be withdrawn," Insp Crosby said.

"Investigations have continued, although several other identified witnesses also declined to provide statements.

"Police have been unable to progress the matter based on the information they have been provided."

If you have any information that could assist police with their investigation, contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
