Barbera starts round in worst possible way
BUNDABERG'S Mason Barbera has created history at the first Newcastle Supercars event.
But the Bundy product won't want to remember it for too long.
Barbera was the first Supercars driver to crash at the new circuit around the streets of Newcastle, which opened yesterday .
The 20-year-old went wide out of the second turn in the first practice session in the Dunlop Super 2 Series and hit the right-hand wall.
Barbera's car then hit the tyre barrier out of the third turn head on to finish his opening practice session.
Barbera didn't sustain any injuries but the car suffered major damage.
"It was really unexpected,” he told Fox Sports.
"It was a massive hit - one of the biggest I've had and I'm really sorry for the team.”
The damage prevented Barbera from getting out in practice two with Todd Hazelwood topping the time sheets.
Barbera is expected to be fine to compete in qualifying and race one today.
He will be back on track at 9.30 Queensland time.
