Man accused of 14 counts of rape

A MAN accused of 14 counts of rape has been denied bail in Maryborough Magistrates Court.

The 29-year-old Maryborough man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, sat quietly in the dock as his lawyer Michael Riedel applied for bail on his behalf.

In addition to 14 counts of rape, the man was also charged with five counts of indecent treatment of a child under 16, four counts of unlawful sodomy and one count of assault with intent to commit rape.

Police prosecutor Kath Stagoll objected to bail on the grounds that further offences might be committed if bail were allowed and because there could be interference with witnesses.

Sgt Stagoll said the man was also a risk of failing to appear.

Mr Riedel said his client was prepared to move to Blackwater to stay with his father.

He said his client had ties to the community as both his father and sister lived there and he would not be a flight risk.

Mr Riedel said his client intended to defend the charges.

He said there was no medical or forensic evidence that the assaults occurred.

Mr Riedel said his client told him the two children who were the alleged victims in the case had accidentally seen the man and his partner, their biological mother, having sex, which might be where the complaint had stemmed from.

"It's his word against the word of two children.

"He can reside with his father in Blackwater.

"He's prepared to have no contact with any children."

Mr Riedel said his client had employment opportunities in Blackwater.

But Magistrate John Smith said there was a "totally unacceptable risk" of further offences being committed and of interference with witnesses.

Bail was refused and the man was remanded in custody.

The case was adjourned until August 29.
