Back Page claims the Christmas Cup
CHRISTMAS came early for South Bingera dog Back Page on Saturday when he stormed to victory in the Christmas Cup at Thabeban Race Course.
The Gary Thorpe-trained champion capped off a successful year, running the final in 26.75 seconds to finishes four-and-a-quarter lengths ahead of Frederico.
It was a fitting end to the year for Back Page, adding $590 to the $12,405 already earned.
Winning was on the mind for most of the trainers at the Bundaberg Greyhound Race Club meet, but there was also a festive cheer about the racecourse.
The day started with Amazing Gayle winning the Thank You Greyhound Queensland League maiden race, beating Diamond Tulsa and Wipe You Out for the honour.
Then Brandon River won the Santa Claus Cup with a three-length win over Flipperty Jig and Hanson Shibaz.
Brandon River, which is owned by Paul Felgate and trained by Apple Tree Creek’s Barry Russell, cracked the $1000 mark in career earnings with the $425 prize.
Felgate had a race named after him at the meet, but it was Yandina’s King Size Lorian that emerged victorious in that race.
The Travis Elson-trained dog raced in a strong field, but was too quick for Missie Linda and I’m Only Foolin in the Novice Cup race.
Cobar Charger came all the way from Tiaro for the weekend’s race and he was not about to let victory in the Chris Williams Maiden slip by.
Allen Martin’s dog beat Black Reggie and Baden Dash with a 27.56 time that had him two lengths in front of Black Reggie at the finish.
Neville Cumner trained Go Bluey to be a winner.
The dog raced a fine race that saw him finish ahead of second-placed Latro and third-placed Select Tejay by three lengths.
Forceful Lady was the winner of the day’s final race.
