Australian killed in Black Dog Ride across the USA

MACKAY'S Charles Linsley said his thoughts are with the family of West Australian Steve Thomas, after his wife Barbara was killed in a motorbike crash on Friday.

Mr Linsley had been riding with both the Thomas' in the Black Dog Ride across the USA, and posted on Facebook about the incident.

Mrs Thomas was killed when the bike she and her husband were riding hit a turkey, near Durango in Colorado.

Mr Thomas is in a critical condition.

"I am sorry to have to share this news with everyone who is following the ride," Mr Linsley wrote.

"Since the accident, our group has closed ranks and everyone is being very supportive of each other, particularly those who were first on the scene and helping Steve and Barabra till the medicos arrived, and those with whom they were particularly close.

"The local sheriffs office provided first responder support last night and again this morning, being available to provide counselling support, and supplying handouts of information on how people might be affected in a number of ways by this situation."

He said the group of riders also included a number of mental health first aiders, who were lending support.

"Some riders are reflecting on whether or not to continue, and will decide before those who are, including myself, leave tomorrow to continue on the ride," Mr Linsley wrote.

"In the meantime our thoughts are with Steve and his family as we support each other through this tragedy."

Founder of the Black Dog Ride Steve Andrews said in a statement riders were devastated by the incident.

"Our Black Dog community are a close-knit bunch and we are devastated by this terrible accident," he said.

"Our deepest condolences are with Barbara's loved ones and our fellow riders."
