App can help you calculate your wine intake

AUSTRALIAN wine brand Jacob's Creek has launched "The Wine Line" augmented reality application - a world first iPhone app which allows consumers to calculate the number of standard drinks in a glass of wine with just a few touches on their iPhone.

The app will be available free of charge.

Research undertaken by the brand has shown that there is a chronic lack of understanding in the general public on this topic - with 86% of Australians unsure of what constitutes a standard drink.

By simply pointing your iPhone's camera at a glass of wine, tracing the liquid outline and choosing the wine you're drinking the application calculates how many standard drinks are included in that serving.

Users can also track how many drinks they are consuming over an individual session, helping them monitor their consumption.

The app is pre-loaded with more than 70 different wines from the Pernod Ricard Australia portfolio including Brancott Estate, Wyndham Estate and GH Mumm.

  • Consumers on average get 150mL serve of wine, or 1.5 units of the standard serving. However, most Australians underestimate how much wine they are consuming, with 54 percent believing that the normal 150mL serve of wine contains fewer than 1.5 units (Galaxy Research)
  • 32 per cent of people have no idea how many units there were in a 150ml glass of wine (Galaxy Research)

Would you use this app to track how much you're drinking?
