Rising stars take to the plate to smash runs at state titles

FOUR Bundaberg up-and-comers will head to Townsville this week with their ultimate goal being a spot in the Queensland primary schools softball side.

The quartet who have made the Wide Bay team are Rebecca Hollindale, of Norville State School, Megan Silcox (Thabeban), Cassie Beck (East) and Alyssa Gilbert, who attends St Patrick's Catholic School.

Even though all the girls are members of different school sides, some combinations exist, with Silcox and Hollindale both playing for club side United, and Beck and Gilbert two of the best players for South Sluggers at club level in their division.

Multi-talented Hollindale will cap off a great year, after earlier in the season qualifying for Wide Bay teams in cricket and soccer.

Her team-mates Beck, Silcox and Gilbert are proven at this level after contesting the Queensland under-14 titles several months ago.

Silcox, the youngest of the team, is also the most experienced having been to these titles 12 months ago.

The four players admit to being nervous yet excited to have this opportunity.

They face a gruelling schedule, undertaking 11 games in only four days of competition.

Sides they will face from around the state include Brisbane teams Met North, Met East and Met West, and regional centres such as South West, Capricornia, North West and Sunshine Coast.
