Questions fly during meeting

SCHOOLS, health, water conservation, and Paradise Dam - Peter Beattie was quizzed on them all when the Community Cabinet's public forum was held at Bundaberg State High School yesterday.

Ursula Cooper was angry about the state of the Bundaberg Mental Health unit - she said management had not changed since she identified problems while working there as nurse unit manager two years ago.

The unit is currently closed.

But Mr Beattie was full of praise for the Bundaberg Base Hospital.

"I think it's really important we don't criticise the new people who are running the show ... give them a chance,'' Mr Beattie said.

Jenny Adamson travelled from Tin Can Bay to ask the premier when the local school would be upgraded to include years 11 and 12, so students would not be forced to travel to Gympie under the new "learning or earning'' scheme.

Pam Soper told the premier building the Paradise Dam was a disastrous decision for the Burnett River and she wanted a guarantee water from the dam would not be transferred to Hervey Bay or Gladstone.

Mr Beattie said while there were no plans to transfer water, he would not rule it out.
