Life?s a beach for runners
By Kate Wilson
FOR most people, a trip to the beach means a paddle and sitting in the sun, but for Danielle Florens and Kevin Hill it means one thing - speed training.
The marathon running husband-and-wife team recently relocated to Bargara and already they are becoming a familiar sight on local roads, beaches and the golf course as they clock up more than 115km each week.
Mr Hill said they were in training for the Putrajaya International Marathon on September 10.
"We're aiming to do well - they have good money in the veterans' division," Mr Hill said.
"You don't get rich from running, but you do get to have a great time and see some great landscape."
Ms Florens said the pretty surroundings at Bargara were helping her train.
"If I had to go to an empty oval, it would be difficult to train," she said. "But the beach is nice to run along and the golf course is so green Ms Florens has represented Mauritius at the Commonwealth Games and is a triple winner of the Townsville Marathon, while Mr Hill has conquered, and won his age division in, the hardest race in the world - the Hawaiian Ironman triathlon.
With years of experience as a coach and athlete, Mr Hill said he and Ms Florens had tried out many techniques and had found the perfect balance of shoes, sleep and sustenance.
"With triathlon, you have to concentrate on three things, and then 10 more. You have to have the right shoes, get enough sleep and eat the right food at the right time."
