ANSWERED: What causes fog to form in Toowoomba

HAVE you ever wondered why Toowoomba is such a foggy place?

And what actually is fog?

Technically it's a visible mass consisting of cloud water droplets or ice crystals suspended in the air at or near the Earth's surface.

It can be considered a type of low-lying cloud.

And because Toowoomba is situated 700m above sea level the cloud sometimes drops down to our ground level, causing widespread fog.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Dean Narramore said Toowoomba was so foggy today because there was so much moisture in the atmosphere that it brought the cloud base down to 700m.

The current fog has been caused by a very moist east-south-easterly flow for the last four or five days that has continued to pump moisture into the region.

Mr Narramore said Toowoomba was often foggy because of its location on the Great Dividing Range.

"We get easterly flows up the Range which drop the cloud level," he said.

"In the wet season we can get low cloudy drizzly days while in the Lockyer Valley it's not a bad day."

He said the city could expect more fog tomorrow, but that a rain band could push the cloud level higher.

Weather terms

  • Mist: Fine droplets of water in the air. It's cloudy and misty, but wet enough to put the windscreen wipers on.
  • Cloud: Condensed watery vapour floating in the atmosphere, typically high above the general level of the ground
  • Drizzle: Light rain falling in very fine drops.
