Another star-clad holiday sap fest
YES, it's another star-studded holiday sap fest from Garry Marshall, but at least New Year's Eve is better than its predecessor Valentine's Day.
Another bevy of Hollywood A-listers have signed up for this one, including Halle Berry, Robert De Niro and Hilary Swank - all three of which do an okay job with an okay script.
Zac Efron and Michelle Pfeiffer have surprisingly good chemistry.
They tie with Abigail Breslin and Sarah Jessica Parker's mum-daughter relationship as my favourite storylines of the film.
It takes a few minutes to adjust to seeing former bombshell Pfeiffer in the role of a meek and repressed PA with a horrible haircut, but she ends up being genuinely cute and has a few laugh-out-loud moments.
I like Efron more in this film than I have in any of his other movies.
Yes he's a bit of eye candy but his character's budding friendship with Pfeiffer's Ingrid is sweet.
Valentine's Day stars Jessica Biel and Ashton Kutcher return in New Year's Eve.
Again, Biel is moderately enjoyable while Kutcher is a bore.
Lea Michele and Kutcher - neighbours who get stuck in a lift - lack any real chemistry, with Michele essentially playing her Glee character Rachel.
Let's hope that this is not the start of Michelle's typecasting.
And poor Kutcher gets stuck with one of the movie's cheesiest lines, but probably best it's him and not Josh Duhamel.
Jon Bon Jovi isn't very good acting-wise, but playing a rock star allows him to get away with it.
Sofia Vergara does wonders for the film.
It doesn't even matter that she's pretty much playing her Modern Family character Gloria dressed up as a sous chef.
She is consistently funny and without her there would not have been nearly as much com in this rom com.
Make sure to stick around for the end credits, where Marshall makes his smartest move in the entire film by poking fun at his own Love Actually-wannabe formula.
I hope Marshall puts his intertwined love stories formula to rest and we don't see Easter, Thanksgiving or some other American holiday getting this tired treatment.
