Alleged sleep scare for teen

A KEPNOCK man has faced court accused of breaking into a backpacker hostel and climbing into a teen's bed early Wednesday morning.

It is alleged the man broke into the Dingo Blue Backpacker Hostel on Burrum St about 3.30am on Wednesday and climbed on to the top bunk where a 19-year-old German backpacker was sleeping.

Bundaberg police Detective Senior Sergeant Joe Hildred said it was alleged when the girl woke to find the man leaning over her, he placed his hand over her mouth to stop her from screaming.

Police allege a scuffle then ensued, which saw the victim and offender land on the ground, causing another backpacker to come to the girl's aid.

The man allegedly punched another backpacker in the face before trying to run away.

Det Snr Sgt Hildred said witnesses apprehended the man until police arrived.

The 24-year-old Bundaberg man yesterday faced Bundaberg Magistrates Court charged with deprivation of liberty, breaking and entering and two counts of assault causing bodily harm.

The matter has been adjourned to November 28 for a bail application. The man has been remanded in custody.
