COMMENT: Alfie Langer inspired kids with big dreams

I STILL look back fondly on that beautiful day back in 1992 when the Brisbane Broncos won their first Winfield Cup.

There was a feeling of celebration in the air around my neighbourhood, as I recall, due in no small part to the fact that the Broncos' backline of the time contained a few famous Ipswich names.

Who could forget the fabled "Ipswich connection" of Allan Langer, Kevin and Kerrod Walters?

Not me, that's for sure. At that time in my life the brick wall of mum and dad's house was Kevin Walters and I was Allan Langer.

Langer would pass to Walters and Walters would pass back to Langer, who would grubber kick between the clothes line and the vege patch, regather and dive over for a magnificent try under the sticks.

A crazed woman would then emerge from out of nowhere and chase the try scorer around the yard with a kitchen spatula, complaining about the football putting marks on her washing.

Some things change and some stay the same.

Alfie inspired the next generation of players, including guys like current Broncos and former St Peter Claver students Anthony Milford and Joe Ofahengaue.

Encouraging them all the way out on the field this weekend will be a little Ipswich legend in a fluoro shirt.

Watching on the telly at home will be the next generation of Ipswich rugby league superstars.
