‘Agile methodology’ buzz at Ocean St business meetup

AN old tradition that is now a buzzword for a modern business methodology will be the focus of an event at the Sunshine Coast's newest co-working space.

"Agile methodology" is an approach to business that urges owners to connect with their market from the word "go", and not be afraid to take shortcuts in achieving their goals. It is credited with creating a culture of fast growth.

Spark Bureau member Michi Tyson, of Agile Attitude, has organised the first "meetup" at the new space, diagonally opposite Sol Bar at 15-17 Ocean St in Maroochydore.

"Agile is really all about how to manage work, how to manage labour, production any kind of work, better," she said. "It's about incremental, iterative delivery."

While agile methodology has been popular in technology industries for more than a decade, small and medium businesses have reportedly been catching on.

Ms Tyson said agile methodology had the potential to help businesses "from knowledge work to hydraulic pumps".

"It's really about ... how can you achieve more with fewer people and less effort," she said.

Spark Bureau director Zach Johnson said the new space was in the process of opening its doors, and its "soft launch" this week would start with Ms Tyson's meetup.

"We've got some really exciting events lined up in our calendar over the next several months and what we'd like to do is make the space available to members for the community, to attract other members around topics and ideas," he said.

Mr Johnson said the Ocean St site had been chosen because it was the Coast's "cultural hub".

"Our environment here is really about bringing the community together and I think Ocean St is a great place to do that," he said.

Register here for the event, which kicks off at 6pm on Thursday.
