AFP silent on release by Wikileaks

AN AUSTRALIAN Federal Police spokeswoman has refused to confirm the authenticity of emails that show close dealings between the force and controversial IT surveillance firm Hacking Team.

According to the emails - which have been released by WikiLeaks - spy agency ASIO, the AFP and Victoria's anti-corruption watchdog, IBAC - all had secret negotiations with Hacking Team.

The Italian-based IT firm sells surveillance tools to governments and law enforcement agencies and has long been criticised for allegedly supplying its products to repressive dictatorships.

Hacking Team was itself hacked earlier this month and its data leaked via BitTorrent. Revelations from leaked emails so far include allegations that Hacking Team worked for the Sudanese and Ethiopian governments and had contact with a Bangladesh-based death squad.
