Clowning around to convince bank not to fund coal mine

ENVIRONMENTAL activists donned clownfish hats to deliver a petition with 670,000 signatures to a US bank urging it not to finance Adani's $16 billion mega mine in central Queensland.

The anti-Carmichael mine and rail project visit to the US Export-Import Bank comes hot on the heels of a meeting the bank held with representatives of Australian indigenous group Wangan and Jagalingou, who pushed for EXIM not to back the mine on their tribal land.

The coalition of activists, including campaigners 350.org, are pressing for the bank to also publicly reject financing the Abbot Point export terminal, near Mackay, that Carmichael would use.

"Already eleven major global banks, including the major lenders to Australian coal projects, have said no to this disaster of a project because they see that it ticks every risk box on the books," 350.org Australia campaigns director Charlie Wood said.

Environmentalists argue the project will significantly impact the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area and increase carbon emissions, impacting climate change.

"US taxpayer dollars should not be used to bankroll reef destruction and climate chaos," Rainforest Action Network climate and energy program director Amanda Starbuck said.

The Carmichael project in the coal-rich Galilee Basin is predicted to yield 60 million tonnes a year.

The Queensland Government is currently considering more than 50 mines and mine expansions in the Galilee and nearby Bowen basins.
