Accused cop biter facing more assault charges
A FORMER Mackay man living on the streets of Brisbane is accused of hitting and biting police officers trying to remove him from church grounds and assaulting police days later while he was behind bars, a court has heard.
Wilhelmus Maria Ryke, 45, faces seven charges including seriously assaulting police; assaulting police by biting or spitting; trespassing; and possessing a knife in a public place.
Five of the charges related to an incident in July when police tried to remove him from the grounds of the Christian Science Church in Brisbane.
Brisbane Magistrates Court heard on Tuesday Mr Ryke was charged with a further two assaulting police offences after he allegedly attacked officers while in the watchhouse days after being arrested.
The court heard Mr Ryke's lawyers had not received all of the prosecution's evidence in order to prepare the defence case and the matter was adjourned.
Mr Ryke's case will be heard at Brisbane Magistrates Court on October 19.
Mr Ryke has been remanded in custody and did not apply for bail.
