A ‘crazy idea’ created children’s book of weird animal facts

MUNDANE tales are now a thing of the past with author Anne-Marie Grundling's new weird, wonderful and whacky animal fact books.

Ms Grundling has released her first quirky publication, Pigs Can Get Sunburnt, and the response took her by surprise.

Pigs can get sunburnt. They do not have dense hair protecting their skin like most animals do.

She has already sold 420 books after only launching a few weeks ago.

Born in the Mackay region, the fact enthusiast said she was inspired to share her knowledge on the unusual things animals do and get up to, after she became bored of what was available to read to her kids.

"I've always been entertained by the fact that male seahorses are the ones that become pregnant and give birth; it's the male, not the female," she said.

"It really spun off from that and I thought other adults and kids would really find it funny."

"I then did my research and ended up with a book full of facts and it took off from there."

Ms Grundling said she never expected such interest in the facts she put in, like the way frogs eat and the shape of a wombat's poo.

Ms Grundling grew up on the outskirts of Mackay, and "flew under the radar" as a child at Oakenden State School.

"I was always brought up with my parents supporting any crazy idea I came up with," she said.

"If I had my mother on commission she would be making a lot of money, because she is my biggest fan and would continue to support the book in the region."

However, 100% of the earnings made will be donated to the Dalwood Spilstead Centre.

Ms Grundling said the charity was close to her heart as she struggled with post-natal depression after her first pregnancy.

"This was my opportunity to give something back," she said.
