We want more events in our state if they bring jobs: study

ABOUT three-quarters of Australians want governments to bring more major events to their states to boost jobs and the economy, new research shows.

Research from Tourism and Transport Forum Australia, released yesterday to mark World Tourism Day, showed a third of Australians would travel overnight for a major event.

About 20% of these people also were willing to head overseas, research shows.

Residents of the ACT, South Australia and Tasmania were more likely to travel interstate for a major event.

Forum CEO Margy Osmond said the research from Repucom, which surveyed about 900 people, showed the top events attracting overnight travel were major sport events (38%) and popular music concerts and festivals (36%).
